The class will start with a presentation about the theme we are exploring and famous examples from the fine arts world that incorporate what styles and themes we are working on. We will learn about the different types of patterns and the use of doodles in the history of this art term. After a brief introduction to the art term, we will delve into the works of Yayoi Kusama, M.C. Escher, Takashi Murakami, and Mr. Doodle and look at some examples. Afterwards, we will discuss how to explore pattern and doodle and combine different designs to make interesting pieces. We will discuss what a Zen Tangle is, what mandalas are, and using art as meditation. We will introduce using the detail of patterns and doodles to make our own coloring pages.
Afterwards, everyone will receive some sketch paper, materials and mediums, and some sheets of fine art paper. The idea will be to start exploring materials on sketch paper to plan out a final piece. We will explore different types of patterns and doodles that can be utilized to create a large, patterned image. The sketch pieces will be to brainstorm and become familiar with the materials. The number of sketches will be up to the artist to decide (or no sketches at all). When the artists are ready, they will create a final piece on their fine art paper.
The conclusion of the class will be an understanding in what pattern and doodle are in the fine arts and some coloring pages to take home. It will also be an understanding of how to use art as a meditation and relaxation technique.
