ART: Caricature Portraits

The class will start with a presentation about the theme we are exploring and famous examples from the fine arts world that incorporate what styles and themes we are working on. We will learn about what caricature is and explore the history of this art term. After a brief introduction to the term, we will delve into the work of William Hogarth and Gerald Scarfe CBE and look at some examples. Afterwards, we will discuss how satire and humor is used in and affects the fine arts, as well as briefly touch on the place of Cartoonists and Illustrators in the fine arts world.

Afterwards, everyone will receive some sketch paper, materials and mediums, and a piece of fine art drawing paper. The idea will be to start exploring shapes and exaggerations on sketch paper before starting a final piece. The sketch pieces will be to brainstorm and become familiar with the materials. The number of sketches will be up to the artist to decide (or no sketches at all). When the artist is ready, they will create a final piece on their fine arts paper.

There will be two options available. People can either choose to do a drawing of each other or they can do a drawing of themselves (mirrors will be provided). They will include one thing that they love to use at the basis of what will be exaggerated or used to add humor to the piece. (Examples: Coffee, Boating, Dogs, Fashion).

The conclusion of the class will be an understanding in what caricature is, including a caricature portrait piece to take home. It will also be an understanding of how to explore creativity with the use of humorous themes within our art.
