ART: Process Art

The class will start with a presentation about the theme we are exploring and famous examples from the Fine Art world that incorporate what styles and themes we are working on. We will learn about what process art is and explore the history of this art style. After a brief introduction to the art style, we will delve into the work of Jackson Pollock and Bernard Cohen and look at some examples. Afterwards, we will discuss how to trust the process and let go of feeling precious about our pieces, in which we will also touch on the techniques of texture and layering in painting.

Afterwards, everyone will receive some sketch paper, materials and mediums, and a canvas. The idea will be to start exploring the materials on sketch paper through utilizing a variety of materials to apply paint with, to plan out a final piece. The sketch pieces will be to brainstorm and become familiar with the materials. The number of sketches will be up to the artist to decide (or no sketches at all). When the artist is ready, they will create a final piece on their canvas.

The conclusion of the class will be an understanding of what process art is, including a process art piece to take home. It will also be an understanding of how to explore creativity beyond the expected painting techniques and allowing the fun of experimentation to take over our way of making a final piece.
