ART: Kitsch Art and Ready-mades

The class will start with a presentation about the theme we are exploring and famous examples from the fine arts world that incorporate what styles and themes we are working on. We will learn about kitsch is and explore the history of this art term. After a brief introduction to the term, we will delve into the work of Jeff Koons and Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, and look at some examples. We will also discuss the idea of thinking beyond a canvas and ready-mades in art, discussing the work of Marcel Duchamp

Afterwards, everyone will receive some sketch paper, materials and mediums, and an unusual surface to paint on. The idea will be to start exploring colors and ideas on sketch paper before starting a final piece. The sketch pieces will be to brainstorm and become familiar with the materials. The number of sketches will be up to the artist to decide (or no sketches at all). When the artists are ready, they will create a final piece on their unusual surface. Everyone will be given the opportunity to choose from a variety of surfaces to paint on.

While brainstorming, we will push and explore the idea of taking something pre-made and making it into a unique piece of art. The conclusion of the class will be an understanding of what kitsch art and ready-mades are, including an art piece to take home.
