ART: Silhouette and Line

The class will start with a presentation about the theme we are exploring and famous examples from the fine arts world that incorporate what styles and themes we are working on. We will learn about what silhouette and lines are and explore the history of these art terms. After a brief introduction to the terms, we will delve into the work of Kara Walker and Auguste Edouart for Silhouette, as well as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee for line, and look at some examples. We will explore the idea of using color other than black, reversing the typically seen silhouette works, as well as using line as a prominent part of an art piece.

Afterwards, everyone will receive some sketch paper, materials and mediums, and a canvas. The idea will be to start exploring colors and ideas on sketch paper before starting a final piece. The sketch pieces will be to brainstorm and become familiar with the materials. The number of sketches will be up to the artist to decide (or no sketches at all). When the artists are ready, they will create a final piece on their canvas. For this piece, we will focus on filling the canvas with colors, blended or not, to start. After this layer has dried, we will focus on using line and silhouette to transform our painted canvas into pieces of art.

The conclusion of the class will be an understanding of how the themes of silhouette and line influence the fine arts and a painting using these themes to take home.
